NAACP Sues GEICO over alleged racist advertising
The NAACP last month filed suit in Houston Federal Court against GEICO, alleging that the company's "caveman" ads on television are "blatant racial discrimination." NAACP attorney Stanley G. Kantwell said the ads "conveniently select cavemen - a group which is extinct - to perpetuate racial stereotypes. When they say 'it's so easy a caveman can do it', what they are really saying is 'it's so easy a Mexican can do it', and 'it's so easy a black person can do it' - I find it offensive and racist." GEICO corporate spokeswoman Kathryn Harris denies the allegation. She claims that GEICO currently insures "tens of thousands of black and Latino drivers" in Texas. A hearing has been scheduled for September 27th in Houston.
