TEXAS FLAVOR CAUSING UPROAR
Angry Moms Protest New Baby Food
(HOUSTON) - A new flavor of baby food created in Texas is causing problems in the North and East. Advertised as "A taste of Texas for the toddlers", the Picante Sauce flavor of Gerber's Baby Food may soon have a warning label. Made with a secret mixture of picante, jalapeno, and crushed rice, the formula is based on an old Texas recipe that was commonly fed to babies in East Texas about 100 years ago. After finding the recipe in an old cookbook, Lydia Benstitch of Plano submitted a sample to Gerber, a large insurance company that also makes baby food. After a few modifications, the food was introduced in March of 2001 in selected southwestern markets. It was successful in the trial campaign, and was distributed nationally starting in Oct 2001. Almost immediately, complaints that the product was "too hot" began pouring in. Typical of those complaining is Sandra McRosenbergstein of Chicago, who says the product "burned the baby's insides all up, he is only a year old, and he's taking Pepsid all day like an old man".
