"Beer For Sex" Scheme Backfires
A Galveston Island man who hoped to obtain sex by trading beer got more than he bargained for this month. The man, Billy Joe McAlias of Crystal Beach, called a radio station to request a song, while sitting at a nightclub called Slices in Galveston. While on the air with the announcer from KACC, an Alvin station at 89.7 FM, McAlias mentioned that he was willing to trade beer for sex, and that he was at Slices. McAlias later claimed that he was only kidding. However, within an hour, a crowd of over 40 women (and 2 men) had gathered, demanding beer and sex from McAlias. An off-duty police officer rendered the opinion that McAlias had made a "verbal agreement" and must follow through with the offer. McAlias, whose bar tab totaled over $500, was hospitalized for rugburns after the incident.
