Sekula-Gibbs seeks to ban alcohol use
in bars and nightclubs

Future gubernatorial candidate Shelly Sekula-Gibbs said that if she gets back into the US House of Representatives she will propose a ban what she calls "the outdated and unhealthy practice of allowing people to drink alcohol in night clubs and taverns."
Sekula-Gibbs cited a study that so-called "passive drinking" has detrimental effects on persons who are not drinking, but are in the same room with persons who consume alcohol. The study was completed at the prestigious Sam Houston Institute of Technology. The study found that nondrinkers in bars were more likely to be injured or killed than in other social setting, such as church or PTA meetings.
"As a dermatologist" Gibbs said, "I have seen the effects of second-hand alcohol."
Sekula-Gibbs was instrumental in getting the Houston city council to pass one of the nation's toughest smoking bans. Under that law, smoking cigarettes in any public place is a felony offense with up to 5 years prison time.
She has been a controversial figure, advocating that the entire Montrose section of Houston be fenced off to prevent damage to the rest of the city in the event of a "Sodom and Gomorrah type incident." A fundamentalist right-winger, Sekula-Gibbs was embarrassed during her term on city council when her chief of staff Raul Castillo was busted for showing his weenie to an undercover cop in a porno shop.
The former councilwoman is trying to get her seat in congress back after losing the race to Nick Lampson last year. The 22nd Congressional District seat is the one once held by Tom DeLay. She received national publicity last year when she demanded that President Bush and Vice President Cheney show up for her "swearing in" to serve the remaining 3 weeks of DeLays term (they didn't). On the day she was sworn in, her entire staff just got up and quit. They later said Gibbs was rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional. A few days later, DeLay's term expired, and Lampson was sworn in. Since then Sekula-Gibbs has been reportedly hiding in her secret underground complex, plotting revenge.
She announced late last month that she would be running again for the seat in 2008.
